I personally find very beautiful that the properties of materials are originated exclusively from the interaction of the electrons and ions that form them. Even if such interaction is nothing but the well-known electromagnetic interaction, the huge quantity of electrons and ions in our materials makes their behavior very complex, giving rise to an enormous variety of properties. All these properties are reflected in the different uses we give nowadays to materials, from all the electronics to solar cells and many medical applications.
As a theoretical physicist working in material science, I am devoted to understand how the electrons and ions interact in matter and create all the associated properties. Understanding this in further detail will be a key factor to engineer new materials with improved functionalities.
